Now that the backpacks are zipped and the syllabi are out… it's officially time to shift our attention to the most celebrated season in the HBCU world:
Homecoming.
But this year, something’s different. Something has everybody talking — and not just about tailgate fits or who’s hosting the best afterparty. The 2025 HBCU Homecoming Schedule is packed, and not in a good way. Alumni across the country are voicing the same concern:
The Cluster Conundrum: Too Many Homecomings, Too Little Time
If you’ve scrolled social lately, you’ve seen it:
Delaware State. Morgan State. Southern. FAMU.
All with Homecoming dates on October 18th.
The week before that?
Alabama A&M. Alcorn. Winston-Salem State. Morehouse-Spelman.
Same date: October 11th.
Even JCSU, Fayetteville State, and NC A&T are stacking up.
Fans call it frustrating. Some call it intentional — a quiet attempt to limit rowdiness, manage crowds, or reduce unwanted attention. Either way, people are being forced to choose. And that goes against what Homecoming is supposed to be.
Homecoming Is More Than a Football Game
At PWIs, Homecoming might just mean alumni brunch and a game.
But at an HBCU?
It’s a reunion. A block party. A cookout. A stroll-off.
It’s Black joy in motion.
So when events are stacked on the same weekend, it doesn’t just mess with travel plans — it disrupts traditions, limits alumni support across multiple schools, and splits up friend groups who rep different alma maters.
Let’s be honest: HBCU folks love to show up for each other. It’s not unusual to see someone at two or three Homecomings in one month — and they spend money, bring energy, and contribute to the legacy at each one.
Some Say It’s Strategic. Others Say It’s Silly.
While some believe overlapping weekends are just a side effect of packed fall calendars and football logistics, others aren’t buying it.
“Feels like they’re trying to limit travel from out-of-town folks.”
“Every time I try to visit my girl’s school, it’s the same weekend as mine.”
“I used to do the HBCU tour — now I gotta choose.”
Whether it’s crowd control, local law enforcement capacity, or economic planning — the frustration is real. And it’s being talked about.
So What Can We Do About It?
At West & Remount, we say this:
If you can’t be everywhere, then show up like it’s your weekend, every weekend.
Bring your energy, your legacy, and your personal style wherever you land. And if you’ve got multiple schools in your circle — we got you. We’ve got custom towels, bandanas, and accessories for:
-
The school you repped at undergrad
-
The one your spouse or best friend swears by
-
The one you didn’t attend, but they got the best tailgate food (you know the one)

And while you're at it?
Order your custom towel early.
Because the only thing worse than missing your school’s Homecoming…
…is showing up empty-handed.
