Stitched for Every Scene:Howard Homecoming Eats: Dukem, Street Grills & Chicken Sandwich Legends

As a proud Howard alum, there are a few places I always hit up when Homecoming rolls around — not just for the game-day energy, but for the taste of memories. This year, while you’re planning your Homecoming weekend (Oct 25!), here are some Black-owned and beloved spots near campus that are must-visits — including a few of my personal favorites.

My Alma Mater Picks:
When I think back, a few places always stand out:

  • Dukem Ethiopian (U Street): Fried fish with veggie plate is my go-to. Flavor, community, and always welcoming.

  • Florida Avenue Grill: The oldest soul-food restaurant in DC. If you want chicken & waffles, hotcakes, or good soul food in a cozy old-school setting, this is it. floridaavenuegrill.com+1

Top Howard Homecoming Must-Visits:
Here are some restaurants & food trucks you shouldn’t sleep on during Howard Homecoming:

Spot What to Order Why It’s Great
Dukem Ethiopian Fried fish + veggie plate Flavor, shareability, and a chill vibe for groups.
Ben’s Chili Bowl Half-Smoke + fries Iconic, historic, and part of Howard lore.
Florida Avenue Grill Soul staples Old soul, old memories, that flavor you can’t get everywhere.
Roaming Rooster Fried chicken sandwich or “OG Nashville” Casual, satisfying, hits the comfort food spot.

Wrap-Up & Connection to My Merch:
Howard Homecoming isn’t just about steps and cheers—it’s the smells, tastes, hands held with friends, and the food‐truck lines close to campus. And when you pair that with something fresh from the Howard Collection (a towel, hoodie, bandana stitched with pride), the weekend becomes not just a memory but a kept item.

If you’re looking to rep Howard with style, I’m dropping new glow + regular Bat Bow pieces, and I’ll have towels, hoodies, and more ready before Oct 25. Keep an eye on the store — or better yet, swing by a pop-up I’ll announce soon.
