5 Things You Didn’t Know About Devin McDaniel, Owner of West & Remount - West & Remount Custom Apparel

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Devin McDaniel, Owner of West & Remount

Today’s a little special — it’s my birthday.
I’m turning 43, and instead of keeping it low-key (which, let’s be real, I still might), I wanted to share a few things you may not know about me — beyond the embroidery hoop and behind the West & Remount name.

Whether you’re a longtime supporter or you just found us through a tag on social media, I’m glad you’re here. Because this business isn’t just about towels and thread — it’s about people, culture, and legacy.

Here are 5 things you didn’t know about me:

1. I’m a Charlotte Native Who Went to Howard and Lived in DC for 20 Years

West & Remount is more than a company name — it’s literally the intersection where I grew up in Charlotte.
I left for Howard University, stayed in DC for almost 20 years, and eventually made my way back home to Charlotte to build something rooted in everything I’ve learned and loved along the way.

2. I Used to Own a Carry-Out Restaurant — But Burnout Led Me Here

Before West & Remount, I ran a successful carry-out spot. I loved it — and it taught me a lot about service, hustle, and consistency.
But I burned out.
And what I saw in the small business world was a need for branding and identity — especially for us. That need turned into custom embroidery. That turned into West & Remount.

3. My Daughter Is a Visual Artist — and She’s Incredible

I’m raising a wildly talented 16-year-old daughter who sees the world through color, motion, and texture. You can check out her work on Instagram at @_marinmotion.
She inspires me daily — and she’s taught me that art is legacy, too. Because it's just the 2 of us, I've chosen to lead through example, and she's picked up my entrepreneurial lifestyle.

4. I Host Trivia at Night — Yes, for Real!

By day, I run West & Remount. By night, I host trivia as @DevinLikeABoy.
It’s my fun outlet — a chance to meet people, build community, and learn the most random things imaginable.

5. I Believe in Building Wherever I Am — Especially for Women & Girls

I’ve always believed in creating community wherever I land.
In Maryland, I led Girl Scout Troop 4573 – Small But Mighty — and we really were. We sold those cookies and used our earnings for unforgettable trips:

  • Camping at Hershey Park

  • Beach camping in New Jersey

  • An overnight museum sleepover

It was more than fun — it was formative.

That’s the energy I try to bring into West & Remount: empowerment, creativity, and showing up for your people.
