You may recognize the pink and green, the pearls, and the step — but here are five things you might not know about these pretty and powerful pioneers.

🔎 5 Things You Might Not Know About Alpha Kappa Alpha

1. Their Founding Was Almost in Secret
The original 16 founders began organizing on the campus of Howard University at a time when higher education for Black women was rare — and organizing as a group? Even rarer. Their early meetings were quiet, private, and strategic.

2. They Were the First D9 Org to Incorporate
AKA became an incorporated entity in 1913, making their structure official and setting the stage for organized, nationwide impact.

3. They Were Integral to Civil Rights Activism
AKA members participated in the Women’s Suffrage March in 1913 — one of the first demonstrations where Black women demanded space and visibility in the fight for voting rights.

4. “Ivy Beyond the Wall” Has Deep Symbolism
This poetic phrase honors deceased members, symbolizing that while a sister’s physical presence is gone, her legacy continues to grow and uplift through the ivy.

5. They’ve Raised Millions for Education and Equity
From scholarships and school supplies to community health and HBCU donations, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s programs have quietly changed thousands of lives behind the scenes.
