🎓 Honoring Legacy, Style, and Black Excellence
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate historically African American fraternity, was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University. We see the Black and Old Gold everywhere — from yard signs to the highest offices in the nation — but there’s so much more to this brotherhood than what meets the eye.
In honor of Founders Day, let’s take a moment to dive into a few things you might not know about the Men of Alpha.
🔎 5 Things You Might Not Know About Alpha Phi Alpha
1. The Frat Was Born Out of Academic Support — Not Social Ambition
Originally formed as a study and support group for Black men at Cornell, Alpha Phi Alpha was created to combat the isolation and racism its founders faced on campus. Brotherhood wasn’t just about camaraderie — it was a tool for survival and excellence.
2. Alpha Phi Alpha Is the Fraternity of “Firsts”
They were the first D9 fraternity, the first to operate internationally, and the first to establish a national headquarters. Trailblazing is kind of their thing.
3. Their Motto Is as Powerful as Their Legacy
“First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.” A mantra that’s shaped over a century of leadership, activism, and professional excellence.
4. The Sphinx Symbol Carries Deep Meaning
The Sphinx represents strength, silence, mystery, and wisdom — and it’s used in Alpha rituals and imagery to reflect the thoughtful leadership expected of its members.
5. Their Members Include Icons Who Changed the World
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, and countless others. Alpha Phi Alpha doesn’t just make men — it helps shape history.
