🎓 The Definition of Achievement — with Swagger

Founded on January 5, 1911, at Indiana University, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has long been a symbol of excellence, elegance, and that unmistakable shimmy. But while the cane, bowtie, and signature step are legendary, there’s so much more to the Nupes than meets the eye.

Here are 5 things you might not know about this storied brotherhood.

🔎 5 Things You Might Not Know About Kappa Alpha Psi

1. They Weren’t Always Called Kappa Alpha Psi

The frat was originally named Kappa Alpha Nu. The change to Psi came in 1915, likely to avoid confusion — and disrespect — with another organization, and to affirm their uniqueness.

2. They Were Founded in the Face of Extreme Racism

Indiana University didn’t even allow Black students to live on campus at the time of Kappa’s founding. Their perseverance and success was a direct act of protest and pride.

3. Their Motto Centers Around Achievement

“Achievement in every field of human endeavor.” It's not just a motto — it’s a mission. From law and politics to entertainment and education, the Nupes don’t miss.

4. They Helped Pioneer Step and Stroll Culture

The Kappa shimmy and cane routines helped define the visual culture of Greek life, bringing style, rhythm, and performance to the forefront.

5. The Cane Wasn’t Just for Looks

Though now a signature prop in strolls and shows, the cane was historically a marker of Black sophistication and resistance — and yes, the Nupes made it iconic.
