Stitched for Every Scene:🎓 HBCU Spotlight: Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU)

West & Remount’s HBCU Spotlight Series kicks off with Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), home of the Golden Bulls and host of this year’s Queen City HBCU Cookout. More than just a school, JCSU is part of our family’s history and the foundation of our Charlotte roots. Learn why this historic university means so much to us—and how you can rep JCSU pride with custom towels and bandanas, available now for pre-order and pickup at the Cookout.

The 2025 HBCU Homecoming Season kicks-off with Johnson C. Smith University.

Founded in 1867, JCSU is a private HBCU rooted in legacy and excellence. Located right here in Charlotte, NC, the Golden Bulls have long been a cornerstone of Black education, empowerment, and community pride. From the iconic Biddle Hall to the Marching Bull Express, JCSU brings unmatched energy, tradition, and culture to every event.

But for West & Remount, JCSU means even more. It’s personal. My father attended JCSU, studying Political Science. His decision to attend this historic university is what brought our family to Charlotte from Polkton, NC. My parents first lived in Southside Homes on Charlotte’s west side, then moved to Revolution Park, just off Remount Road. In the early 1960s, they purchased the home where I was raised—on the corner of West Blvd and Remount Rd. That same intersection would later become the namesake of our brand.

So when we say JCSU built us, we mean it.
