Inside Our Live Embroidery Activation at Lululemon SouthPark
Share
There’s something special about watching embroidery happen live.
The sound of the machine catches people first. Then they stop. Then they watch. Then they start imagining what they would put on something of their own.
That’s exactly what happened during our recent live embroidery activation at Lululemon SouthPark in Charlotte, NC for Mother’s Day weekend.
West & Remount Custom Apparel partnered with the store to provide on-site embroidery personalization for shoppers purchasing gifts and apparel throughout the event. Guests were able to shop inside the store, choose their item, and then have it personalized before heading home.

What started as a customization station quickly became part of the shopping experience itself.
More Than Just Embroidery
Throughout the activation, guests personalized belt bags, sweaters, totes, shorts, puffer vests, button-up shirts, bucket hats, and more.
Names were the most popular request by far, which makes sense. Seeing your own name stitched directly onto something instantly changes the way it feels. It becomes yours in a different way.
The Lululemon staff leaned into playful customization too. Several team members chose small embroidered lemons stitched onto their dolphin shorts — simple, stylish, and full of personality.
That’s one of the things I love most about live embroidery events. Some people want luxury. Some want humor. Some want sentimentality. Personalization leaves room for all of it.

The Moment That Stayed With Me
One customer came in shopping for his mother, who did not speak English.
He wanted something thoughtful and personal for her. While talking with him, I found a quick embroidery file that said “Mom” in Arabic and stitched it onto the garment he selected.
He was incredibly happy with it.

And honestly, I’ve been thinking about that moment ever since.
That interaction reminded me that personalization is not really about thread or fabric. It’s about memory. It’s about making someone feel seen. Sometimes the smallest stitched detail becomes part of a much larger emotional moment.
That’s the kind of thing live embroidery creates in real time.
Why Live Embroidery Works So Well in Retail Spaces
One of the most interesting things about the activation was how naturally it attracted attention throughout the store.
The embroidery machine has a very distinct sound — one people do not hear every day. Guests followed the sound into the space. Some stopped to film videos. Others gathered around to watch pieces being stitched live.
The storefront at SouthPark is covered in large windows, so even people outside the store stopped to watch the embroidery process happening inside.
And perhaps most interesting of all: several guests purchased items specifically because embroidery was available that day.
The one-day-only aspect made the experience feel exclusive and special. Instead of simply buying a gift, customers were able to elevate it into something thoughtful, personal, and memorable.
A shopper could buy a Mother’s Day gift, walk the mall for a while, and then return to pick up a finished personalized piece that felt completely unique.

That changes the emotional value of the purchase entirely.
What This Activation Taught Me
This event also completely changed the way I handle live embroidery ordering systems.
Early into the activation, I realized something important:
I could not simultaneously embroider quickly, answer questions, engage guests, and manually manage orders efficiently at the same time.
That realization led me toward the digital ordering system I now use for conferences, conventions, and live events today.
Guests place their orders digitally through QR codes or kiosks, which allows:
-
cleaner order management
-
correct spelling and personalization notes
-
smoother guest flow
-
fewer lines
-
text and email pickup notifications
-
more time for genuine interaction
Ironically, the better the activation experience becomes, the more people want to stop and talk. Digital ordering allows me to remain personable without slowing down production.
That system has become a major part of how West & Remount approaches experiential embroidery activations today.
Why Personalized Experiences Matter
People do not just want products anymore.
They want participation.
They want stories.
They want experiences attached to the things they bring home.
That’s why live embroidery works so well for conferences, conventions, retail activations, and experiential marketing events. Guests are not simply handed merchandise — they become part of creating it.

And when they leave with something personalized specifically for them, it carries a completely different kind of value.
